Less well known than his compatriot Edvard Grieg, Norwegian composer Geirr Tveitt (1908–1981) remains a name waiting to be discovered by music lovers worldwide. Inspired by his country’s traditional folklore and its majestic landscapes of lakes, forests, and snow-covered fjords, Tveitt developed a unique musical language drawing as much from Debussy as from Bartók or Prokofiev.
His prolific body of work carries a tragic history: in 1970, a devastating fire at the composer’s estate on the shores of the Hardanger Fjord destroyed 80% of his manuscripts. Only a few masterpieces survived, such as his Sonata No. 29 “Etere” and various folk songs.
In April 2026, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes released a remarkable monograph on the Simax label, restoring this forgotten genius to his rightful place in Norwegian musical literature. This film follows in Tveitt's footsteps, meeting with Andsnes as well as Tveitt's daughter Gyri amidst the breathtaking beauty of the fjords.
