In this video, we're going to take a look at the Legionary vs Hoplite, a classical battle from antiquity.... but it's the Renaissance! Since we have sources from 16th century Italy describing weapon combinations very similar to that historical sword fight, why not use it for some experimental archeology? If you're a fan of classical warfare, then this video is for you.
The Roman Legionary and the Greek Hoplite were both heavily armoured infantrymen. They predominantly used the Spear, a short Sword and a Shield. Now let us pit these two types of warriors against each other in a sword fight - this is going to be intense!
In historical fencing or HEMA (for Historical European Martial Arts) we reconstruct sword fighting systems from historical sources. Our club focuses on Italian medieval and renaissance sources, fencing with the Spadone (Two-Handed Sword), Spear, Sidesword (One-Handed Sword) together with Shield, Cape, Dagger, you name it!
P.S. Yes, of course there is a picture of Rome Total War in here. ;-)

01:20 Fight!
