“Legend to Legend Night: A Celebrity Cavalcade” (NBC 12/28/93)
Applauding 12 show-business stars and a couple of boxing greats whose accomplishments, notes host Katie Couric, “have made our world that much richer.” As the show unfolds Couric introduces selected honorees who, in turn, pay homage to another in the same field. The tributes blend stills, clips, concert footage and interviews into thumbnail sketches. Some nominees are featured in performance segments.
Comedy: Bob Newhart delivers a monologue about his Chicago youth, and the legend he welcomes—97-year-old George Burns—sings “Old Bones.”
Oscar winners: Gregory Peck salutes Jimmy Stewart (who was not in attendance).
Pop-music: Johnny Mathis sings “Chances Are” and “Misty”; Tony Bennett offers “Steppin’ Out with My Baby” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
Leading ladies: Angie Dickinson and Eva Marie Saint are honored for their work in TV and film.
Boxing champs: Sugar Ray Leonard plays tribute to “the Greatest,” Mohammed Ali.
Movie-musical stars: Debbie Reynolds performs “You Made Me Love You”; Gene Kelly reflects on his career.
Country songbirds: Wynonna performs “No One Else on Earth”; Barbara Mandrell sings “In Times like These.” (2 hrs.)
