TRANSCRIPT:

Hi my name is Kailey from Crochet Unraveled, the single stop for all things crochet. Today we’re going to learn how to make a slip knot, which is the first thing you are going to do in your crochet projects that are crocheted in rows. In order to crochet in the round, you will want to start your project with a magic circle instead.

The slip knot is what you are going to put around your hook to get started. So, let’s go ahead and get into it.

So once you have your hook and your yarn, go ahead and grab the short end of your yarn in your non-dominant hand and wrap the working yarn around your four fingers. Make sure that the yarn crosses where it is wrapped.

We’re going to pull the loop that we just made off of our fingers, reach our fingers through, and pull up another loop. Now, take those 2 long ends in your non-dominant hand and the loop in the other, and pull in opposite directions. And that is your slip knot! It’s as simple as that.

So, we’re gonna pull on that working yarn to make the slip knot a little bit tighter to fit our hook. Just go ahead and slip your hook through and pull it a little bit tighter on the hook but make sure that you still have a little bit of extra space so you can turn your hook and pull it through the slip knot when you start crocheting.

Let’s go ahead and pull it out really quickly. All you have to do is grab both ends and pull in opposite directions. Pop!

And let’s try it again, one more time. So grab the short end in your non-dominant hand, wrap the working yarn around, make sure it crosses. Go ahead and pull a loop up and then just pull the two long ends and the loop and pull them in opposite directions. And there’s your knot again.

Make sure you’re practicing this a couple of times so next time you go to start a project you will have it memorized.

Slip your hook through, and you are ready to start crocheting.
