From the moment they were unveiled at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in February 2018, the museum’s official portraits of President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, respectively, have become iconic. The West Coast stop for the must-see The Obama Portraits Tour, LACMA is also presenting Black American Portraits, an accompanying special exhibition that brings together more than two centuries of portraits of Black Americans.
In this lecture, Liz Andrews, the executive director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and co-curator of LACMA’s presentation of The Obama Portraits Tour and Black American Portraits, talks about the role of photography in documenting and celebrating Black American identity and community.
Evenings for Educators is a professional development program for K–12 teachers focusing on LACMA's permanent collection and special exhibitions. Each session presents strategies for incorporating the visual arts into the classroom with activities that explore the artistic process, approach works of art as primary sources, and emphasize parallels between the visual arts and core content areas.
