In this lecture I introduce Opioid and Opiate pain relievers. I start by discussing pain and pain perception, mechanisms of analgesia, the history and classification of opioid drugs, as well as the opioid receptors. Finally, I spend some time discussing the properties of morphine. In the next lecture in this series, I discuss other opioid drugs as well as potential treatment for addiction.
