In this video tutorial, we will show you two methods for making caged beads.
Wrapping a wire "cage" around a bead adds a new dimension to a simple bead, personalizing it, increasing interest, and gives some visual "umami" that can really make a finished piece of jewelry pop.
Wire caging a bead is simple to learn and can take your jewelry making to a new level. We use round beads in the video, but other bead shapes can be used. We especially like the look of caged rice-shaped beads. (You can see some in the slideshow at the end of the video.)
To make Caged Beads you need:
• Wire: we use 20 gauge, round, copper wire in the tutorial, but use larger or smaller gauges when they seem more suitable for a project. Square or other wire shapes will also work.
• Beads ( of course). We use 8 mm beads in the video, but use what you have, want, or need, adjusting wire length to suit the bead size.
• Wire cutters (we are using flush cutters because it gives a cleaner, or flush, cut)
• Round nose pliers
• Chain nose or flat nose pliers
• We also used some steel wool to clean the wire (000 or 0000 will work).
• Ruler
• A permanent marker
