In this new Beards and Bangers series, I’m joined by Tristan as we break down the realities of car ownership for young and new drivers. Not the glossy stuff. The stuff that empties wallets, tests patience, and teaches responsibility.
In this episode, we compare two very different cars from my own fleet:
Rover 3500S (P6) with its old-school carburettors
MG ZT 190 with ECU-controlled fuel injection
Using these two cars, we explain:
How carburettors work and why they need regular fettling
How ECU fuel injection differs and what it changes for reliability
Maintenance expectations for older vs newer technology
Running costs, fault-finding, and ownership realities
Why “cheap to buy” doesn’t always mean cheap to own
This series is aimed at young people about to learn to drive, parents helping them choose a first car, and anyone who wants a clearer picture of what car ownership really involves beyond passing the test.
