On the outskirts of Kibale National Park in western Uganda, a community-led effort is keeping wild animals at a safe distance from neighboring properties. The goal of the project is to reduce the instances of animals from the park eating or damaging the crops of nearby subsistence farmers. Community members found that simple mitigation strategies -- like stringing up “bee fences” -- can deter wild elephants and help people and animals to peacefully coexist, says WashU biological anthropologist Krista Milich, who also studies endangered red colobus monkeys at the park.
