Public school teachers are leaving the profession like never before - more than 200,000 every year. Many say they’re fed up with being disrespected and dictated to by administrators. But some teachers are fighting back by running schools themselves. John Tulenko visited one of these “teacher-led” schools, Mission Hill School in Boston, to find out how it works.

$Learning Matters: School Spirit In Mississippi Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on New Orleans and surrounding counties. It ravaged the town of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi whose infrastructure has been virtually destroyed. Currently, half of its residents are gone, and the other half live in trailers. Nevertheless, this fractured community has a new center: the school system. Trailers have replaced the original school buildings, and many teachers have returned, along with about half of the students. With new students registering every day, no technology, disorganized libraries, mud playgrounds and students who may have been out of school for months, the system faces enormous challenges including a multi-million dollar debt. Yet hope survives. This program covers what life is like for students, teachers and the principal of Second Street Elementary School in Bay St. Louis.$
