Delaware’s path from segregation to integration transformed educational opportunities for Black students across the state. This presentation will examine the limited high school options available to Black students prior to the 1950s, beginning with Howard High School and the Delaware College High School program in Dover, before exploring the creation of Louis L. Redding High School, William W.M. Henry High School, and William C. Jason High School. The session will also highlight the desegregation of Delaware’s public schools and the eventual closure of the state’s segregated Black high schools, offering a compelling look at a pivotal chapter in Delaware’s educational and civil rights history.
