This piano tutorial is all about learning to play epic rock piano, improvising on a 16 bar chord progression in the key of D major. Rock piano is a particularly cool form of pop piano, and you can really let go and have a good time - but, compared to ballad piano styles, it can actually be pretty simple, especially if you already have a pretty good knowledge of basic piano chords.

In fact, probably the toughest thing to master with rock piano is the rhythms, and especially the interplay of left and right hands on the keyboard to create the distinctive rhythmic tension that drives the music forwards. One particularly important musical skill that working on rock piano can help you with is playing in a strict time, especially against a metronome, click track or backing track. In fact, I’ve included some rhythm section backing tracks for you to download (see links below) and practise your own playing against.
I also mention a few other skills here that are important both for rock and other pop piano styles, such as improvising basic melodic licks, getting to grips with rubato and working chord progressions into natural voicings on the piano keyboard.
