Most calculus students memorize the quotient rule and still get it wrong, because there is a minus sign buried in it: flip the two terms and your whole answer comes out negative. The fix is the order mnemonic - low d-high minus high d-low, over low squared - and it is not even a new rule, just the product rule in disguise via f times g to the negative first. We run it on y = x/(x^2+1), simplify to (1-x^2)/(x^2+1)^2, and the numerator instantly pins the curve's peak and valley at x = 1 and x = -1.
