A short teaser for my next video, Aria The Animations ending theme, Rainbow. The acoustic guitar intro is one of the main charm points of the song, its just so beautiful, so Id want to replicate it on piano, including the individual left and right audio track.
Ive never done this before, so it thought it might need a bit of an experiment to anticipate audio and video errors during making the real cover. I wasnt even planning to share this, but it turns out quite well done that I eventually wanted to make this a short teaser video.
This features the Yamaha M1 I have in Jakarta, audio is recorded with TASCAM DR-07 Mark II. The real cover will be filmed in Bandung with Roland RP301.

Sorry for the delay! Early college really cuts my practice time to half as much. This is one of the songs which I thought were impossible for me to play on piano, it turns out everything can be achieved by practice. Learned by ear as always, and this is a bit rushed so it doesnt have that perfectly polished feel. I might make a newer version once I improve in the future.
This is my own arrangement arrangement, more similar to the original song considering the more popular arrangement circulating around over the past years is the slower, more mellow version.

This might be my first real music video, with record-breaking 7 total camera angles, including 1 dynamic angle handheld by myself.
About the cover:
The first thing that pops in my mind when listening to the original song is, well, groovy. I just cant listen to it without imagining something fun, so I thought, something thats fun to listen to should be at least fun to watch, right? I then came up with an idea to make a sort of behind the scene mixed into the video, and in black and white to help you distinguish which are the behind the scene ones and which are my real performance. Its especially hard to do when youre doing things solo and only had a few short hours to work with from start to finish until it gets dark. What youre seeing is oversimplified, but it gives you an idea about the making process and how I set things up pre-recording. I cant be happier with the result tho, it was one of the hardest planning Ive made, but its so much fun to do.
About the song:
Piano Man introduced me to the song, and it turns out I like it much more than I expected. Its a mood-lifting song, if I can call it. So special thank you to Piano Man for the suggestion, I now have one more song added to my library~

About the soundtrack:
This is an unreleased soundtrack from Hunter x Hunter (1999). A real shame because this is among the best soundtracks in any series for me, and it screams CHILDHOOD right at my face and heart. I nearly cried the moment I found out that I can pull this off with the RD-800. When someone mentions Hunter x Hunter, this soundtrack and the 1999 version is the first that pops up in my head. This soundtrack was played for the first time in episode 3, when Gon was standing on the deck looking into the sea and told the captain that he wanted to become a hunter just like his father. Later, this is often played in more relaxed / peaceful situations. Its been almost 20 years after the show aired for the first time. If you grew up with the 1999 version, it makes you feel really old, isnt it? :)
About the cover:
I could finally make this soundtrack sound just about right and good enough to join my other YouTube videos. All the sounds you hear are generated from the RD-800s sound engine and recorded directly into USB in 16-bit 44.1 KHz WAV. The concert grand piano sound was tuned to have more character, and the harmonicas EQ was modified in the piano to make it sound a bit crisper. This is my first time playing with the pitch bend, and the first time where I feel like I have total control over the sound Im playing.

I cant say much about this soundtrack other than its part of Higurashis main theme, composed by Kenji Kawai. The title, Ai, isnt love, the kanji literally translates to sorrow / mourn / grief, and boy does that also translate to the ambience it creates. This soundtrack is basically the piano version of the main theme, but with slightly different arrangement.

About the song and cover:
This arrangement is based from the leaked Anime Expo 2017 footage, which is why its slightly different than the one in the music video.
You know, Im usually really late in covering anime songs (even that is an understatement) mainly because I rarely follow airing shows and would not bother hunting for popular openings. Now that weve got the beautiful opening of potentially the best anime of 2018 from my favorite animation studio, how could I not take the opportunity (read: revenge) to cover it 6 months before the shows release? It also means that this short cover is only a rough speculation on how the TV Size version will be like. Im guessing the actual TV Size opening ends at 1:30, following the industry standard. I personally think this song will fit into the shows overall theme really well. Its gives an atmosphere of beauty, sadness, despair, and most importantly, hope.
The song is performed by TRUE, the same group who performed the openings of Hibike Euphonium! seasons one and two, which I really like, and now I actually got the chance to cover one of their songs. This opening theme, titled Sincerely was first performed in Anime Expo 2017. I started learning this the day after covering Evangelions Zankoku na Tenshi no Teeze.
Fun fact:
As of making this, theres no high quality audio of the song yet. I learned this from scratch with the power of hearing with low-quality audio in less than two days, making this the first video in the world where you can hear the songs melody in high-quality, Im a teeny bit proud of myself :3
Misc:
Violet Evergarden, as far as the commercials and previews show, has the best animation in my book, period. Its pretty much an open secret that I really admire Kyoto Animation for not outsourcing their shows and pays their staff properly, resulting in the most commercially successful anime studio by a large margin. I love most of their works, Violet Evergarden is currently one of my most anticipated anime. I really cant wait for it to air.
