Polyrhythms can get complicated 😵💫 but break it into a few steps and it gets WAY easier. Here’s the idea:
1. Start with your main subdivision and lock into a groove - here it’s 5s. Clap every beat and 'sing' the subdivisions 👏
2. Switch to the other number - here it’s 3s, while keeping THE SUBDIVISION THE SAME. This is the tricky part, and that's why we keep emphasizing the notes that line up with the clap. Map it out on paper if needed ✍️
3. Once the numbers feel solid, slowly shift the emphasis off the claps and onto the 1s of what you’re singing. Take it slow 🧠
4. Now reduce the volume of the other counts until only the 1s remain. Turn them into “TA”s for better rhythm 🎶
At that point, you’ll feel 5 cycling against 3 claps - and landing together again. That’s 5:3. You made it 🙌
