People can be exposed to lead in soil in several ways. Children are especially at risk because they often play outdoors and naturally put their hands in their mouths. Lead can enter the body by accidentally swallowing contaminated soil, breathing in dust particles, or tracking soil into the home on shoes, clothing, or pets. Gardening in contaminated soil can also be a source of exposure.

Reducing exposure is possible with simple, practical steps. One of the most important actions is testing soil through a qualified laboratory to determine if lead is present. If elevated levels are found, risk can be reduced by covering bare soil with clean soil, mulch, or grass to create a barrier. Washing hands after outdoor activity, removing shoes before entering the home, and cleaning pets and outdoor items can also help prevent contamination from spreading indoors. Raised garden beds filled with clean soil are another effective way to grow food safely.

By understanding where lead in soil comes from and how exposure happens, families can take informed steps to protect their health.
