UCLA Anderson’s Global Immersion Courses

UCLAAnderson 2023-07-27 | At UCLA Anderson, the Center for Global Management’s 4-unit elective and experiential courses expose students to a country’s economy, political environment, major industries and businesses, startup communities, local culture, key historical events and the many aspects of conducting business outside the United States.

Through a combination of classroom learning, followed by one week in-country, students hear from prominent business leaders, academics, politicians, senior policymakers and successful entrepreneurs, including UCLA and UCLA Anderson alumni, who address some of the most important economic, business, social and political aspects of the respective countries. Company and startup visits, contextual visits, cultural sessions and networking with alumni complement the curriculum of these courses, which provide many transformative learning experiences, embody a “One Anderson” ethos and offer significant networking opportunities. Along the way, students develop lifelong friendships across Anderson’s four MBA degree programs.

Anderson MBAs Develop Scalable Solutions

UCLAAnderson 2023-06-30 | Each year, several UCLA Anderson MBA capstone teams focus their efforts on advancing prosocial causes with nonprofits outside of the United States. Class of 2023 MBA students Blaise Badway, Martin Keyt, Rebecca Kim, Alex Marmureanu and Jon Sdao worked with the Human Sciences Research Council in South Africa to evaluate mental health service delivery models for rural communities. The challenge was to find affordable, financially sustainable, accessible and scalable solutions in areas where the unemployment rate might be as high as 40%. Starting with a clean slate and appealing to local mental health experts and administrators, the team applied what Anderson taught about making a business viable long term, and they adapted it to the needs of the nonprofit and its clients.

UCLA Anderson was the first business school to require a field study capstone project in lieu of a master’s thesis. Not Just Housing First, Housing Always

UCLAAnderson 2023-06-29 | The solution to homelessness is homes. But cities and organizations adopting a housing first model face obstacles and challenges to meeting the needs of people experiencing homelessness for a range of reasons.

John Maceri, chief executive officer of @SantaMonicaOPCC, has decades of experience as an industry leader and advocate for L.A.’s most vulnerable unhoused communities. UCLA Anderson Ziman Center for Real Estate invited Maceri to explain how permanent supportive housing (PSH) differs from affordable housing generally, and the critical role that client-driven support supportive services and case management play in the success of supportive housing and the lives of its diverse populations.

Mines is an Associate Professor of International Economics in the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. Her current research focuses on the consequences of globalization on the labor market, with emphasis on quantifying the heterogeneous costs and benefits experienced by different segments of the population.

Mayor Karen Bass Welcomes L.A.’s Newest Business Pros

UCLAAnderson 2023-06-26 | Mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass, the first woman and second African American to be elected as the city’s chief executive, delivered the commencement keynote address to celebrate the matriculation of UCLA Anderson’s full-time MBA, Fully Employed MBA, Executive MBA and Ph.D. students.

Mayor Bass looked to the Class of 2023 as the region’s newest changemakers and appealed to them to join the City of Los Angeles in efforts to make municipal government run more like a business. “Anderson grads are innovators who drive our city, our nation, our world’s economy and culture. I’ve tapped into this brilliance myself,” she said, citing the two dozen UCLA alumni who served on her mayoral transition team.

“I know our city is better for the connections you made here,” Mayor Bass told the graduates, who hail from every continent except Antarctica. “That’s how deeply UCLA is woven into the fabric of this city.”

Will U.S. Banks Regain Our Confidence?

UCLAAnderson 2023-06-23 | Investors and regulators may have grown complacent in the 15 years following the disastrous effects of the 2008 bank failures, believing such a financial crisis could never beleaguer U.S. banking systems again. In March 2023, regional California banks Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank collapsed in quick succession, making them the second and third largest bank failures in U.S. history, only to be surpassed by the Fed’s seizure of First Republic in May. These failures precipitated a sudden loss of confidence in the banking system, triggering bank runs and an aggressive government response to alleviate the turmoil.

Is more pain on the horizon? While the banking system is showing signs of improved stability, questions remain about the repercussions for lending, real estate, regulation and the economy more broadly. UCLA Anderson’s Fink Center for Finance partnered with the UCLA Ziman Center and the UCLA Anderson Forecast to convene a panel of experts who analyzed what contributed to the recent banking crisis, explained how markets have responded and predicted what lies ahead.

Anderson MBAs Team with Local Entrepreneurs

UCLAAnderson 2023-06-13 | Each year, several UCLA Anderson MBA capstone teams focus their efforts on advancing prosocial causes with nonprofits outside of the United States. Class of 2023 MBA students Slawomir Baniak, Juan Ignacio Castro, Jikyu Choi, Layla Kara, Gyubeom Kim and Donghwan Lee worked with the Charles Darwin Foundation in the Galapagos Islands to develop a strategic plan for the foundation’s incubator. They consulted with local entrepreneurs to help build a community of sustainable startups amid the islands’ delicate ecosystem. Traveling there, they said, enabled them to appreciate the unique conditions and culture of the Galapagos in ways that changed the scope of the project as well as the team’s recommendations.

UCLA Anderson was the first business school to require a field study capstone project in lieu of a master’s thesis. Making Big Decisions in a Changing World

UCLAAnderson 2023-05-30 | UCLA Anderson alumna Susan Wojcicki (’98), special advisor to Google and Alphabet and the former CEO of YouTube, was awarded the school’s 2023 John E. Anderson Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of how her personal life, professional achievements and community service exemplify the objectives of her alma mater.

A business titan and culture builder, Wojcicki decided to pursue and MBA and take on leadership roles at Google and YouTube when the brands were in their nascency. In conversation with fellow UCLA Anderson alumna Johanna Voolich Wright (’05), VP of product for Google Workspace, Wojcicki described the pivotal decisions she’s made in her career and as a leader in tech, and looked ahead to what generative AI will mean for YouTube and its cherished creators.

Wojcicki has endowed a UCLA Anderson faculty chair dedicated to the study of data science.

Reinventing Technology for a Global Society

Ramesh Srinivasan is a professor in the UCLA Department of Information Studies and director of UC Digital Cultures Lab. His research encompasses economic, cultural, political, environmental and even psychological issues associated with the digital revolution.

Srinivasan introduced UCLA Anderson MBAs to the technology shifts — such as algorithms, AI, automation, machine bias, data sets and cryptocurrencies — having the greatest impact on businesses, the economy, labor, medical care and more. Advocating for a “planetary and global dialogue,” he is a leading voice pointing the way toward a digital world that supports democracy, economic security and business interests. “Let’s have active collaborative dialogue with people all around the world,” he says, “because there are creative and brilliant people all around our planet.”

Looking beyond traditional explanations, UCLA Anderson Professor of Economics Paola Giuliano finds that differences in cultural values across societies are integral to explaining differences in educational choices.

Giuliano’s widely cited research tackles socially relevant questions, such as the historical roots of gender inequality and the cultural origins of family living arrangements, and reveals surprising implications regarding female labor participation. How Does Housing Affordability Affect Our Health?

UCLAAnderson 2023-05-17 | Issues of housing in California are critical to current local and statewide political debates, but they are also important to public health. Housing is a social determinant of health. In other words, where you live has consequential effects on your overall health and well-being.

According to the 2021 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), 1 in 10 adults — or 3 million people — in California had difficulty paying to keep a roof over their heads, and many also resorted to cutting back on seeking health care as a result of housing affordability.

In this webinar organized by UCLA Anderson’s Ziman Center for Real Estate, Sean Tan, author of a new UCLA Center for Health Policy Research report detailing the state of housing in California, discussed findings from the 2021 CHIS that examine the relationship between our state’s prevailing housing crisis and residents’ health.

Post-Pandemic, Experts Teach Us Lessons for the Future

UCLAAnderson 2023-05-17 | COVID-19’s place in history is assured as the first pandemic of the 21st century. It left disorder and crises in its wake everywhere it struck.

In the edited volume How COVID-19 Took Over the World: Lessons for the Future, Center for Global Management visiting scholar and policy expert Christine Loh tracks the spread of COVID-19 to weave a coherent picture of how scientists learned about the virus, how authorities reacted around the world and how different societies coped. Written by a leading team of public health, policy and economics experts, with contributions by global supply chain expert and CGM faculty director Professor Chris Tang and Hong Kong-based economist Michael Edesess, the book provides an in-depth analysis of various countries’ responses to the onset of the pandemic, as well as suggestions to increase capacity and capability to fight future pandemics.

In a discussion moderated by Loh, Tang and Edesess shared insights and perspectives on the lessons we learned from a global pandemic. They provided an overview of global governance and international cooperation, discussed economic and social consequences of the outbreak, highlighted the supply chain challenges that surfaced, and examined and compared specific countries’ responses.

A Special Communication Class, Just For Quants

UCLAAnderson 2023-05-16 | Adjunct Professor Robert McCann has taught effective presentation and communication at various schools, including the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and UCLA Anderson School of Management. Bringing his leadership and executive coaching expertise to our Master of Financial Engineering students has changed their confidence and outlook dramatically. With a focus on repackaging complex solutions for a non-quant audience, McCann understands that solving a problem only goes halfway; selling the solution completes it. Students learn methods to distill and articulate their work, making the most of their extraordinary abilities.

“We can see gains very quickly. We videotape the students. The students practice and present every day. Our students can really use the communication skills across the different courses as they communicate complex, difficult information to a variety of audiences,” says McCann.
