The U.S. Forest Service is accepting public comment after releasing new plans to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule.
Conservative lawmakers are touting the decision as a win for firefighting, while conservation groups are calling it an attack on Montana's public lands.
In a statement on X, U.S. Sen. Tim Sheehy said, "We've made it illegal to cut down trees, to thin forests, to prescribe burn. We shut down our roads for 30 years through our forests. How do we think we think we get there to cut down trees, to log to care for our forest, to log, to care for our forest to make sure our local communities have access to those forests."
