The lava field formed in two places around Gunung Api Island during the last explosive eruption that began on May 9, 1988 at 6:30 am. Then a pillar of ash rose to a height of 3,000 meters. Volcanic bombs were thrown into the air from the mouth of the volcano, and lava flows flowed along the eastern slope. Between May 9-19, 1998, 5 craters were formed. Strong tremors were felt within a radius of 2 kilometers from the volcano. About 7,000 inhabitants of nearby islands were evacuated to safe areas, 2 nearby villages were destroyed. The volcano ceased operations in August 1988. Satellite observations of the volcanic eruption showed that particles of volcanic ash reached a height of 16 kilometers. The lava fields are an excellent basis for coral colonization and very quickly overgrown with new young bright corals, showing a great example of the evolution of marine life. Keraka Island is a tiny island between Gunung Api and Banda Neira with a lighthouse.
