Handwired by our technicians and thoroughly tested by the musicians at Clouds Hill, this beautifully simple pedal has been 100% handmade in Hamburg. Conceived to prevent signal loss from long chains of pedals, the valve booster strengthens signal output without the need to increase volume. Thicker and much more assertive, the signal becomes so clear that we are actually able to recognise the individual brand of valve inside the pedal.
And, not only does it sound great with guitars and basses, we also use the pedal to improve DI signals with synthesizers, reamp badly recorded material, boost gain from quiet source or for distortion and valve harmonics. In fact, this pedal is so versatile, it can even be used to improve the listening experience of music on your Hi-Fi at home.
Technically speaking, the pedal is a Shunt Regulated Push Pull (SRPP) Class A circuit, a Hi-Fi circuit which was first used in the late 1950s. We used a NOS Mostard capacitor (best known for it's use in vintage Marshall amps) in the tone stack of pedals 1-20, and NOS Siemens MKH, WIMA Durolit, Eroid, Erofol and 'Tropical Fish' capacitors in pedals 21-100.
The Clouds Hill Vintage Valve Booster has also been designed to be compatible with as many types of valves as possible, including 12AX7/ ECC83/ 5751, 12AY7/ 6072, 12AT7/ ECC81 and 12AU7/ ECC82 valves. And, you could even try your own. For example, a valve with horrible measure values for a uniquely different sound. But first, we would suggest familiarising yourself with the booster's capabilities by using the valves you purchased with your pedal.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN CHANGING VALVES. This pedal uses a high voltage power source. So ALWAYS ensure that the mains power supply is disconnected before opening the pedal, as the circuitry inside allows the high voltage to dissipate after all the plugs are disconnected. Andy only use the 12V AC power supply included inside the box.
