Program Note:

“Ubi Caritas et Amor (Deus ibi Est.)” was originally commissioned by the 2023/24 Bel Canto Women’s Choir, directed by Prof. Brandon DiNoto. This orchestral arrangement was created for the 2025 APU Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Christopher Russell and premiered at Azusa Pacific University on October 26, 2025.

In my reimagining of the ancient Ubi Caritas chant, the familiar words “Where charity and love are, God is there” emerge from an apocalyptic landscape where Scripture has been nearly forgotten—leaving only the forces of nature to echo God’s eternal presence. The piece features handbells that recall ancient traditions, along with mysterious cluster chords, modal melodies, and subtle modulations. It culminates in an eruption of majestic, otherworldly praise.
