Roger Daltrey once told me of his vocal durability: “I haven’t got a secret. I just work hard, and I try to keep a passion for what I do. I love to sing, and through that, I get a reward that money can’t buy.”
That was backstage, just ahead of a 2018 solo show at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel. We thought then that Daltrey might be ready to close out his singing career. But the 82-year-old rock legend is still on the road of rewards, headlining for the first time at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas, a three-show run that kicks off Aug. 26.
The trifecta of performances are part of Daltrey’s nobly titled “A Great Night Out” tour, which extends through the end of September. The Who frontman is playing more dates solo this year than he did during the group’s entire “farewell” tour.
Daltrey is set to play selections from The Who, solo favorites and a few covers. He will be backed by the same musicians who played his most recent “Summer Semi Acoustic Tour” in 2024: Simon Townshend, the younger brother of Who great Pete Townshend, on guitar; Billy Nicholls on mandolin, Jody Linscott on percussion, Doug Boyle on guitar, John Hogg on bass, Katie Jacoby on violin, Steve Weston on harmonica, Geraint Watkins on keys and accordion and Scott Devours on drums.
That’s a lot of musicianship, beyond the “semi” acoustic format. Knighted in December, Daltrey is blending anecdotes from his 60-plus year career into his touring shows. “Candid banter and direct rapport” are promised from AEG Presents, which books the theater.
