The lateral subsystem (LS) is challenged on a daily basis when walking or climbing stairs. The LS is made up of the gluteus medius, tensor fascia latae, hip adductors and quadratus lumborum of the opposite side of the body. Simple exercises like those in this video can help test for dysfunction.

During these tests, the fitness professional should look for:

• Drop of the hip
• Knee valgus, or internal rotation
• Foot pronation
• Upper torso rotation, or spine lateral flexion
