Last Lantern is a 2-4 player (no solo mode) cooperative game in which players are working together to race to the end of a track by filling in all available spaces in their lanes. Players secretly and simultaneously choose one of three polyominal tiles. Players that pick unique tiles may add them to their lane. Players that pick the same option must discuss who receives what resources. Any gaps in the design will be filled with fireflies drawn from a bag. If too many black fireflies are drawn from a bag or the discarded tiles reach the end of a different track, players lose the game.
