The S2R Project is something I've been working on since about 1 to 2 years ago.
The current name is for preventing any confusion and is not final.
S2R Project aims to be a cover album/fanmade soundtrack mimicking the style of an old ROM hack called "Sonic 1 Remastered" by PU70,
but for Sonic 2. The reason for this is the music ports in this (rather "okay" otherwise) hack being quite influential in my interest for
some music theory concepts, like identifying chords, and has definitely influenced a lot of my MIDI making, all the way back in 2013.
Various songs seen in more limited sound chips like 8-bit consoles had their chords a lot more pronounced and "obvious" in the adaptations
seen in the hack, while various others were made from mod/it/xm modules from modarchive.org (The hack uses a xm → smps converter to port the songs.)
It has not yet been decided exactly, but the goal is to have one song per Sonic 2 song, one for each act, and one for each special stage. Plus a few bonus tracks (i.e. Speed Shoes)
If there are more songs than expected, it could be used as an alternate soundtrack, much like the "Sonineko" option in the hack.
Every track respects the Genesis limitations, and mostly follows the adaptation decisions made in the hack, with a couple exceptions.
I'll be releasing these in batches and once finished, be on the lookout for a lossless release in looped BFSTM format.
"Why not in an actual Genesis ROM or in VGM format?" you might ask,
it's because I already started the project using a DAW with VSTs, and converting everything properly is a rather tedious process,
more than it probably should be by now. But as proof that it will work on a real Genesis here is a conversion of "Mischievous Robot (Cave Story)":
