Everyday Cinematic Birds | Last Day! Robin Nest Day 10 4K Highlights @EverydayCinematicBirds | Uploaded September 2021 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
Today was the last full day in the Robin nest! The chicks fledged the nest the next morning at 11 days old. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the nest that night. One of the chicks died overnight after possibly being suffocated by the mother. I noticed with this nest the mother was determined to sit on the baby chicks every night. Usually once the chicks have enough feathers and can regulate their body heat the mother no longer sits on them at night. I saw on the security camera I had placed at the nest that she sat on them that night and the chicks looked very uncomfortable. The dead chicks neck was severely bent and crushed when I took a closer look at it the next morning. It's unfortunate but luckily the other chicks safely fledged. This gives this nest a 50% fledge rate as the nest starts started with four eggs. Of those chicks that fledge usually only around 25% of them will survive to the next spring. Hopefully these newly fledged robin chicks will make it!
