Shingles or herpes zoster is caused by the same virus as chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus and can trigger painful skin rashes in approximately 1/3rd of those afflicted with chickenpox. These symptoms can last many weeks and, in some cases, can result in chronic pain called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Laser therapy is now referred to as photobiomodulation therapy or PBMT and has several beneficial mechanisms of action that may assist in the treatment of both shingles and PHN.
