What happens when DC takes Green Lantern, combines it with a dark detective mystery, embraces the weird sci-fi mythology of the comics, and gives Hal Jordan and John Stewart the character-driven story they deserve?
Lanterns is INCREDIBLE.
In my Lanterns Season 1 review, I’m diving into the new DCU series starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and why I genuinely think this is the best thing DC has done since Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
I absolutely loved this series.
Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan as the two intergalactic cops become involved in a dark Earth-based mystery surrounding a murder in the American heartland. That detective premise gives the series a grounded foundation, but the Green Lantern mythology allows the mystery to expand into something much bigger.
And that balance is exactly what worked for me.
This show is dark, sci-fi, twisted, mysterious, and most importantly—it isn’t afraid to get WEIRD.
There was understandably a lot of conversation leading up to Lanterns about whether making Green Lantern feel like a grounded detective series would take away from everything that makes this corner of DC so imaginative.
For me?
It works.
Because underneath the investigation is a much deeper exploration of what it actually means to be a Green Lantern.
What does carrying that ring do to someone?
What responsibility comes with having that kind of power?
And what happens when the people entrusted with protecting everyone else are carrying decades of their own baggage?
That is where Hal Jordan and John Stewart become the heart of the series.
Kyle Chandler is a fantastic Hal Jordan.
He has the charm, charisma, confidence, and that perfect “go fuck yourself” attitude that I want from Hal, but there are also layers underneath the swagger. Chandler makes him feel like someone who has been doing this for a LONG time—and someone carrying everything that comes with that history.
Then there is Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.
He might genuinely be the perfect John Stewart.
Pierre brings the seriousness and presence I wanted from the character while making John feel completely different from Hal. That contrast makes their relationship work, and the creators have emphasized that the dynamic between these two Lanterns is central to the series.
Watching the veteran Hal interact with a newer John gives Lanterns so much personality.
But I also love the scope of the story.
This isn’t simply two superheroes solving a murder.
The mystery gradually opens the door to the deeper mythology surrounding the Green Lantern Corps, and the series has room for characters including Guy Gardner and Sinestro while exploring the larger history behind these intergalactic protectors.
And then we have Episode 5.
Without diving into spoilers here…
Episode 5 is the standout of the entire season for me.
It is the episode that completely redefined how I looked at the series and made me understand exactly what Lanterns was trying to accomplish with this story.
That episode alone is going to create some incredible conversations.
Overall, Lanterns is everything I wanted this series to be and more.
It is a detective story.
It is science fiction.
It is a character study.
It is weird cosmic DC.
And underneath all of that, it understands why being chosen to wear a Green Lantern ring should actually MEAN something.
