A lecture by Mícheál Ó Mainnín

The United Kingdom has a number of indigenous languages which have had an important role in the shaping of the identities of its constituent parts. They are not on an equal footing in terms of legal status; neither have they had similar levels of support at grassroots level.

While the linguistic identity of Northern Ireland has been the subject of contestation, Scotland is also of interest in this respect. This lecture compares these situations with particular reference to (in)visibility in the public space.
