“I was on hands and knees, and after settling into the fact I’d just accomplished the hardest part of birth, laughing and sobbing, feeling his tiny ears and chubby cheeks, I gathered myself and turned over to a leaned-back, seated position for the final stage of labor. The first contraction came a minute or so after his head had emerged and at this point, I was silently, powerfully pushing, every ounce of my energy going into birthing his body. With that push he came halfway out, and another surge immediately took over and I birthed the rest of his body into my hands as the sun was rising…time stood still.”
