Linking the Åland islands and mainland Finland, Hitachi Energy's high-voltage direct current (HVDC) Light® provides reliable power to the 29,000 residents. The ‘black-start’ system, a feature of HVDC technology that can support the security of power supply, was recently successfully tested on the islands. These tests showed that power restoration after a complete blackout can take just fractions of a second, so fast that the outage isn't even noticed.
