A break from my normal observations and videos. Some friends invited me to go boating up the lake above the dam yesterday in a really nice rented pontoon boat. It was a beautiful hot summer day and the water was nice and calm. I didn't record very much but managed to get a few shots of the scenery that I can't really see from the campgrounds and lake access spots. Still only a small portion of this very long mountain lake. It's so nice here, but please stay away!

Some points about the lake/day:

- Water level is at about maximum height which is reached during the summer, and controlled by the hydro dam.

- Water temperature recorded by the pontoon boat varied between about 19°C and 21°C, and warmed up on average over the course of the day by a couple degrees.

- Air temperature reached the upper 30's (°C) but no accurate measurements were taken.

- Depths in this lake were showing well over 1000 ft!? I can't find any information on the deepest point of the lake, but the average depth is about 46 meters or 150 feet.

- Black swans could be observed throughout the observation and especially towards the end of the day, but I kept in on the dl.

$Inferior Mirage of Water - Example #2 Not really a continuation of the last video, just another example of what I think is an impossible (with one vertical refraction gradient) inferior mirage, where the fold line intersects the visible water surface. This one is a little more close than the last example and a little different appearing mirage. Footage is from Shelter Bay observation #9.$

$Get up higher! I need to make these short videos as a break from the longer ones that I may never finish. This video addresses the claims that observations close to water cant be reliable because refraction effects are too strong. My experience has been that looking over more land (a requirement of getting higher above water) causes more immediate distortion and doesnt guarantee a less refracted image.$ $Where is 8 inches? 3rd observation of the season at the boat launch and all I got was 4 more hours of extreme black swan conditions. Same general effects as the first two, although never quite the same. Massive upward displacement with extremely strong compression. Rough guess I would say the visible water is occupying the visual space of about 20 meters height at around 8 km. I could measure a more precise estimate at some point, but I doubt this is my biggest black swan ever. Plus, what could anyone do with that information? We know that water appears well above eye level as frequently (if not more) than inferior mirage appears below eye level. Still doesnt mean the Earth is concave. This is one of the more common refraction scenarios that doesnt seem to change much over a long period of time. Im always disappointed when I see this condition right of the hop, because it means Ive missed the transition from inferior mirage, and missed any potential obstruction. Mirage effects are seldom observed once that apparent horizon has set itself up well above eye level.$ $Inferior Mirage - Symphony of Obstruction. Slightly cooler evening than the last one but I got there just in time to see a transition from complicated mirage to a more less steady strong inferior mirage. Im looking through multiple vertical temperature gradients and the effects of each gradient blend together, creating some interesting mirages. Notice the water texture change early in the video. This is caused by refraction in my opinion. Ill explain more in a longer video. This is my worst camera that I only use for very low observations and I forgot to set the manual focus so it went really out of focus towards the end. I also have the usual few hours of footage from 2 other, better cameras. More about this observation to come!
