You can't usually see it at all from the shore: the Fertő, as it is called in Hungary. A third of the surface of Lake Neusiedl is covered with reeds up to three meters high. Lake Neusiedl is the third largest lake in Central Europe. Geologically, it marks the border with Eastern Europe. The lake basin measures 320 square kilometers, but the lake itself only covers around 230 square kilometers and is only one and a half meters deep. The water level is mainly determined by rain and snow. A paradise for animals, which has been largely left to its own devices as a nature park since 1992. In Pannonia, as the region is also known, many people have left their mark.

The Romans founded Sopron, formerly known as Ödenburg. The city is the center of the region. Pannonia is a steppe region with extremely hot summers and bitterly cold winters in the shadow of the Alps and at the beginning of the Hungarian Plain. The Esterházy family has shaped the history of Lake Neusiedl since the 16th century. Prince Nikolaus von Esterházy brought Joseph Haydn to Eisenstadt as a conductor. Loyalty to the House of Habsburg, as well as skill in politics and on the battlefield, brought the Esterházys one of the largest fortunes in Europe. In 1956, during the Hungarian uprising, the area around Lake Neusiedl briefly became the focus of world history. Many thousands of people fled across the Einser Canal to Austria.
Similar events then repeated themselves in the late summer of 1989, this time with tourists from the GDR using the border to seek their fortune in the West.

UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Humanity" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” tells of these places in impressive images.
