Since arriving in Guatemala more than 3 months ago, everyone has told us we have to visit Lake Atitlán. We had very high expectations of Lake Atitlán after hearing from so many people that it is the best place to visit in Guatemala, and our expectations were surpassed during our time there. In this Lake Atitlán travel vlog, we start our exploration of Lake Atitlán by going on a tour on top of the lake with Pepian from 10Adventures. We got into kayaks and paddled our way between towns while taking in the stunning volcanoes that surround Lake Atitlán. After getting our fill on top of the lake, Pepian took us on a hike from community to community, and up to some beautiful vantage points to view the lake. This hike was the perfect way to see the lake from new angles while also beginning to understand more about the people who live around the lake.
The next day, our new 10Adventures guide brought us to two Maya communities around the lake: San Juan and Santiago. These two towns were very different, and equally amazing in their own rite. San Juan is a beautiful town that sees lots of tourists and is well equipped to show off the incredible ways of life of the Maya people. These families have called Lake Atitlán home for more than 4000 years, and they continue to have a strong culture, language, and traditions. We loved learning about the weaving that the women have done here for all of these years, and were completely surprised when we went to a local Shaman's home for a blessing at the alter in his home. It was such a neat experience that we never could have done without our guide!
If you're planning a trip to Guatemala and want to know where to go and what to do, Lake Atitlán HAS to be on your itinerary. Our one-week stay easily turned into three weeks, and we would have stayed longer if we didn't already have plans! This easily became one of our favourite places in Guatemala, and we're already planning to go back again one day.
