One of the loudest selling points of electric vehicles is the lack of oil changes, but a Tesla Model S Plaid owner has offered a reminder that maintenance costs don't disappear entirely, they just move somewhere else.

Miss Jilianne posted that her Plaid needs a fresh set of tires about every twenty thousand miles. And these are not bargain bin tires. We are talking Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, and a full set runs around twenty three hundred dollars before taxes and fees.
Now before you panic and trade your Tesla Plaid for a bicycle, let us talk about why this happens. The Plaid is heavy because of that big battery pack. It also delivers instant torque the second your foot touches the pedal. And it rides on wide sticky tires built for one job, helping this thing hit zero to sixty in under two seconds.
Those same qualities that produce supercar acceleration - also chew through tread far faster than a normal commuter car would.
The comments section was not exactly sympathetic to Jillain. A lot of people pointed out that any car doing zero to sixty that fast, burns tires fast - gas or electric, does not matter. And a comparable gas performance car would still need oil changes stacked on top of similar tire bills.
Other Tesla owners chimed in too. Some Model 3 and Model Y drivers reported getting 30 to 42,000 miles out of their tires, just by watching tire pressure and easing off the launch control a little.
So the moral here, EVs do not eliminate maintenance, they just relocate it, straight to your tire budget.
