Fixing the issues in law enforcement takes more than just adding formal training. Yes, training should be regular, at least quarterly, but we also need to bring back educational Roll Calls. These are chances for supervisors to reinforce what’s been taught and build on it. In my 26 years with the New Jersey State Police, I rarely saw formal Roll Calls outside of Newark. At most stations, Roll Call wasn’t required, and even when it happened, it was more casual chit-chat than meaningful instruction. This needs to change if we want real improvement in filling the knowledge gap in policing.
