Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) and Allan Ramsay (1713-1784) are two of Scotland’s most important portrait painters of the Enlightenment. In this video, BBC Presenter Lachlan Goudie discusses his introduction to the subjects and styles of Sir Henry Raeburn, whose instinctive and spontaneous style inspired him as a young man. Goudie goes on to discuss the differing style and technique of the internationally renowned Allan Ramsay.
