I recently got married, and it’s had me thinking a lot about how I’d want to raise a child one day. On a recent trip to visit some friends on their farm in Wisconsin, I saw firsthand how they raised four incredible kids by instilling confidence through hard work. Inspired by that, I shot this film using the NIKON ZR and a strict set of cinematography rules, a process I’ll be teaching more about inside our documentary academy.

Work is good.
But for people where everything is done for the child, you're really setting the child up for struggles in their life because they won't develop a sense of agency.
If you do too much for your kids, you build your self-esteem by stealing theirs.
And when they make a mistake, don't rescue them.
You're going to be tempted because you're going to have such love for them.
You don't want them to hurt.
You never want to tell a child they're smart.
Go, you work hard.
Because if you tell them they're smart and they can't learn something, their self-esteem drops.
You want kids to make mistakes, so they learn agency, [and that] 'I'm responsible for my life.'
Because character is built through struggle.
