It’s August, and we’re talking about phosphorus.
Photosynthesis is an essential process for plants. It captures energy from the sun and transforms it into the energy plants need to grow. Phosphorus is part of the molecules that store the energy produced during photosynthesis and distribute it throughout the plant.
Without enough phosphorus, plants struggle to grow.
Sometimes, their leaves even turn dark green or purple!
Have you ever tried adding used coffee grounds to your plants? Coffee grounds contain small amounts of essential nutrients for plants, including phosphorus.
However, adding too many coffee grounds directly to the soil can be counterproductive. That’s why it’s best to add them to your compost bin instead. There, they mix with the rest of the organic matter, feed the microorganisms in the compost, and help retain moisture and nutrients.
Do you use coffee grounds for your plants?
At the Institut Català d'Investigació Química, phosphorus is part of studies exploring the molecules that made life possible. This research helps scientists better understand the chemistry of RNA and the processes that may have led to the formation of the first biomolecules.
This is the eighth video in the series in collaboration with @LaTerrapeutica, exploring chemical elements and plants.
This video was produced with the support of the Department of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia, within the framework of the CERCA programme grants for research centres to promote and encourage the use of the Catalan language in research (CERCA 2024). Reference: 2024 ACERC 00025.
See you next month with a new element!
