La Manga del Mar Menor comenzó a urbanizarse en los años 1960 con la expansión del turismo litoral en las costas españolas. Desde entonces, la especulación y el desarrollo masivo de infraestructuras costeras han provocado la pérdida de la biodiversidad y de los ecosistemas dunares que protegían el litoral de manera natural.
La Plataforma Pacto por el Mar Menor es una asociación ciudadana que se creó en el año 2015 con el objetivo de informar y proponer soluciones para la mejora del estado de conservación del Mar Menor, cuya situación empeora año tras año debido a una gestión ineficaz de la franja costera y a una contaminación crítica por parte de los vertidos agrícolas. Junto a la plataforma, numerosas asociaciones luchan hoy en día por dotar al Mar Menor de personalidad jurídica mediante una Iniciativa Legislativa Popular (ILP), a través de la recogida de firmas en todo el país (https://www.marmenorpersona.legal/).

La Manga del Mar Menor began to be urbanised in the 1960s with the expansion of coastal tourism along the Spanish coasts. Since then, speculation and the massive development of coastal infrastructures have led to the loss of biodiversity and dune ecosystems that naturally protected the coastline.
The Plataforma Pacto por el Mar Menor is a citizens' association that was created in 2015 with the aim of informing and proposing solutions to improve the state of conservation of the Mar Menor, whose situation is worsening year after year due to ineffective management of the coastal strip and critical pollution from agricultural waste. Together with the platform, numerous associations are currently fighting to give the Mar Menor a legal status by means of a Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP), through the collection of signatures all over the country (https://www.marmenorpersona.legal/).
