Here is the simplest way to understand the difference between L and R in English.
For the L sound, the tip of your tongue touches the alveolar ridge, the bony bump right behind your top front teeth. Air flows out over the sides of the tongue.
For the R sound, the tongue tip floats in the middle of the mouth and does not touch anything. The back of the tongue lifts slightly toward the upper back teeth, just like the purple shirt vowel position.
One touches. One floats. Once you feel that difference in your own mouth, L and R will never feel the same again.
