Stupid Robot Fighting League is a funny new sport from Te Puke, New Zealand.
In it's simplest form, two robots with no robotics are controlled by poles attached to their hands, feet and head.
They beat up the other robot. It's lots of fun. If one robot's head is removed it's counted as a knockout.

I had a float entered in the 2020 Papamoa Christmas Float Parade. I had two GoPros facing left and right from my float to video anyone that waves and said, "Konnichi Wa!"
One particular group of kids were quite enthusiastic so I asked them to say, "Konnichi Wa," like they were from a metal band. They totally nailed it.
My float was a double decker wheelbarrow. For the full video click this link... youtu.be/_LpReyn-rZM

Hi and welcome to the 2020 Stupid Robot Fighting American Championship.
2020 was a year that could well be described as a dumpster fire. Well, get ready to watch the poorly organized contents of a dumpster battle it out.
A Stupid Robot is essentially a humanoid shaped life sized puppet made from garbage. Its joints are thin wire twisted into a loop that links its body parts together. The Stupid Robot is controlled by poles attached to its hands and feet.
The 2020 Stupid Robot Fighting American Championship features 14 Stupid Robots, each designed by different people from around the US of A. The competition is set out in a five heat, three semi final and one final structure. We will also feature an exciting new tag team exhibition match for your viewing pleasure.
The rules of Stupid Robot Fighting League are very simple. The fight is two minutes long and there are two possible roads to victory. The ultimate aim is to separate the opposition Stupid Robot's head from its body . Decapitation is a knock-out and an instant win. If the fight goes for the full two minutes without a knock-out, at the end of the fight the referee performs a limb count. The Stupid Robot with the most limbs left attached at the end of the fight is the winner.

Riding on the back of the resounding victory (The Leyton Dowman Trophy) in the Te Puke Christmas Float Parade, I got an invite to take part in the Papamoa Christmas Float Parade.
The basic plan was to dominate the competition and win all the prizes and receive all the glory. All this with a double-decker wheelbarrow.
To bring you up to speed, we shot a 8 Stupid Robot fight series featuring 8 Stupid Robots designed by 8 people from or in Japan. We hopped on Zoom where each competitor chose the parts they wanted for their Stupid Robot then went through the decoration process.
After that we fought their Stupid Robots here in New Zealand where they could follow their Stupid Robot's career.
There was a winner and that winner was lifted high above all the other Stupid Robots in the competition. It was carried in the, "Glory Chariot," also known as, "The Double-Decker Wheelbarrow."
We get to have a chat with some of the float builders and ask them what they think of The Glory Chariot and what they think their chances of beating it are.
As part of the video I have two GoPro's on either side of The Glory Chariot. I encourage anyone who wants to be on my YouTube channel to say, "Konichiwa," to the camera.
The sun was baking and I had to walk the route twice. I was not in good condition by the end of it.

Recently we recorded a Stupid Robot Fighting series for our friends at The Daily Portalz in Japan. dailyportalz.jp/. 8 Stupid Robots designed by 8 people in or from Japan battled it out for the title of the 2020 Stupid Robot Japanese Champion.
To glorify the winner I have put him in a wheelbarrow and pushed him in my local Christmas parade. This video is a vlog of the process.
Also, I want to win the supreme award for my float. I really wanted to defeat all the other floats, crushing the dreams of children in Te Puke. Obviously this is the running joke for the video. Lets just play along.
As it was a possibility I wouldn't win the supreme award for my float, I hedged my bets and doctored my entry form and created my own category. As I was the only entrant into the, "Wheelbarrow Category," winning was guaranteed. So for my victory I needed a trophy. So I made one from a headboard, cardboard, aluminum foil, wire and hot glue. Totally classy!

Welcome to a very special fight for us at Stupid Robot Fighting. In this video you will witness, Clint "The Bell Ringer," Smith represents Denmark with, "The Great Dane." Facing off against The Bell Ringer is Sarah, "The Onionator," Smith with a Stupid Robot on her own design, "Chaos." Chaos waves the flag for New Zealand.
Sarah and Clint run an awesome YouTube channel called, "Cheaper Ways NZ." If you are looking for super handy videos that will show you hints and tips on frugal living look no further. The link is near the top of this description.
So for a bit more detail on The Great Dane, he was designed by Carina from Denmark. She was traveling through Te Puke and was roped in to design and build her own Stupid Robot. The Great Dane boasts a wire basket head, a play dough machine for a fist and a muffin tray for a body.
Looking closer at Chaos. He was remotely built by Sarah and her kids. It was pretty much chaos so hence the name. His head is a vacuum cleaner cyclone, his fist is a keyboard and his body is the back of an office chair.
It was awesome to catch up with some mates and smash some some stuff.

This video is of me kicking a Stupid Robot for two minutes. It gets wrecked!
We are getting close to shooting the 2020 Stupid Robot Fighting American Championship and before then, it's time to make some improvements.
This video is a test of the foot pole system. Lately we have had multiple breakages and because of how the pole is fitted to the boot, it is extremely fiddly to replace.
I've now added a foot plate to simplify the pole replacement. This video is a test to see how robust this system is.

Join with John from Stupid Robot Fighting League and the team from ArcAttack as they choose the parts for Lightning, the second part of the ArcAttack tag-team, "The Storm."
This tag-team match will be a world first for Stupid Robot Fighting League and will feature on the 2020 Stupid Robot Fighting American Championship.
The basic process for most Stupid Robot designers is to choose the parts and then guide the decoration process. Each designer is basically having a proxy war in New Zealand. :)

With the Stupid Robot Fighting American Championship coming up, it's time to prepare all of the American designed Stupid Robots. Part of this preparation is getting Adrian Choyce, the Stupid Robot's chest hair into tip top shape.
Join me and my friend Shawn as we hack off my beard and attach it you Adrian Choyce's chest. The end product is quite spectacular.

During the Virtually Maker Faire I watched the live stream put on by ArcAttack the team that make music using Tesla Coils. They took interest in my name and we talked a little about Stupid Robot Fighting League. I invited them to have their own Stupid Robot and they said YES.
So here we are. You are looking at the construction of the Stupid Robot designed by ArcAttack. This is the first of two but more details on that to come.
Keep an eye out for the SRFL North American Championship.

El Minion is on top of the world and we needed a fitting way of celebrating the first ever world champion for Stupid Robot Fighting League. Here is your chance to play a part in the building of a musical legend!
We are attempting to raise $500 to part fund the conversion of El Minion's head to an epic electric guitar. His head is currently with Euan from from Tin Pig Instruments. Once the campaign begins, so will he. tinpiginstruments.wixsite.com/tinpig
Once El Minion's head is constructed into an electric guitar we will give El Minion a new head. :)
The big plan is to invite people that can't play the guitar to shred (play an epic fast solo) during Stupid Robot fights. The perfect backdrop to a Stupid Robot fight.
Please support this Kickstater campaign to create a superbly ridiculous musical instrument.

Welcome to fight number 3 from Maker Faire Wellington. We had an awesome crowd for this epic battle and the fighters didn't disappoint.
On the left we have, "The Bazalisk," piloting Mish Mash. The Bazalisk is a journalist from RE News covering Stupid Robot Fighting League in a story.
Mish Mash is a creation of the US band, "The Stupid Robots," and their fans. Mish Mash features a toaster oven head, a pool cleaning robot's cowling for a body, and the lethal toaster for a fist.
On the right we have, "Mr Roboto," battling with, "Tibore Bot 3000," representing Australia. Mr Roboto is one of the awesome volunteers helping out at Maker Faire Wellington.Tibore Bot 3000 is designed by LouieG and his family.

This video covers how to make, "Leyton Dowman," the Lego based mini Stupid Fighting Robot.
This video is a continuation in the series to do with the easy to build Stupid Robot Fighting Mini Desktop Fighting System. It's an easy-to-build manually controlled fighting system that you control with sticks attached with your fingers and thumbs. Here's a couple of videos to explain: youtu.be/zw_q5b03Nyo and youtu.be/-ZR4zedSsYY
The basic construction of Leyton Dowman the Stupid Robot is Lego blocks, string, hot glue, card and bamboo skewers. Hopefully these are available where you are.

Welcome to the 3rd video in the Stupid Robot Desktop Fighting System series.
When building the wooden versions I figured there there would be lots of people living in apartments that would have no access to wood. Well this video is for you.
This is an instructional video of how to build your own Stupid Robot Desktop Fighting System. In this video I'll give you a good overview on how to build it from a banana box. There is more than enough cardboard in one box for the project. If you have the good fortune to of having a fridge box to use I doubt you will need to double it up like I've done in this video.
Please reach out if you have any questions and please send your photos and videos through of how your project is going.

So here is a fantastic, simple project for you to build at home during lock down. It's a shruken down version of the Stupid Robot Fighting League's, "Recktagon," the frame which houses all of the violence during a Stupid Robot Fighting League fight. Here is a video of a full sized Stupid Robot Fight - youtube.com/watch?v=kkij0TWm-yQ
I was originally going to approach a toy company to see if it's something that can be packaged and sold. Due to the Corona Virus and so many people being in lock down I figured the world could do with something super fun to do.
If you don't have access to wood, don't worry, I have you covered. I've recorded another video of how to make a DIY Desktop Fighting System (Recktagon) from cardboard as well. Here is a link to that video. - youtu.be/-ZR4zedSsYY I've also written a blow-by-blow document on how to build the cardboard version. Keep an eye out on stupidrobotfighting.com for when I make the link live.
Please reach out and send me photos and videos of your builds and fights. I'm really looking forward to this.

I'm quite excited about this fighting system because I can see the potential of how it can be utilized with a different array of models.
This design is my gift to you. Build it and make it your own. Please reach out if you need any help or tips. We can learn together.

Join me as we drive to and attend the awesome Maker Faire Wellington 2019. This event was run buy the awesome crew, Capital E.
We first start off with the drive which is a short montage with some lovely kiwi music and some beautiful New Zealand scenery.
Then we get to Capital E. Who are Capital E? Here's the answer to that from their website: "...Capital E is part of Experience Wellington, a registered charity and a Council Controlled Organisation established by Wellington City Council to develop and manage Wellington’s cultural and arts assets. Our organisation hosts a combination of unique visitor experiences that contribute to Wellington’s economy and reputation as a centre of excellence for arts, culture and creativity. Together, we collaborate and draw upon each other’s strengths, skills and knowledge to deliver excellent visitor experiences that capture the heart of Wellington...."
The next thing we did was the, "Maker Muster." This was a meet and greet with the volunteers and stall holders of Maker Faire Wellington. We put on a fight there and some of the makers made trophies from smashed Stupid Robot parts. I was actually quite stoked about that.
After that I include some of the surrounding footage from the fights we had at Maker Faire Wellington 2019. There are plenty of giggles in there. Then is time to clean up the mess.

This bonus raw fight was shot in Auckland, New Zealand after the shoot we did with the crew from, "Itte Q," a famous Japanese variety show. The 3 comedians from the show designed and decorated their Stupid Robots before battling them out.
On the left we have Gareth fighting with, "Tabe Mecha-ko." Tabe Mecha-ko was designed and decorated by Itte Q comedian, Yoshiko Nagata. Tabe Mecha-ko boasts a sturdy plastic toy tyre for a head, a vacuum cleaner chassis for a body and a plastic skateboard deck for a fist.
On the right we have Chenae piloting, "Ushishi Ito 49." Ushishi Ito 49 is designed and decorated by Itte Q comedian, Asako Ito.
Ushishi Ito 49 has a glorious cow watering can head, a shop vac part for a body and an ice tray for an arm.
Gareth and Chenae were around at the time of the shooting and were a great help packing up. As the Stupid Robots were still hanging up we decided to give them another fight.

Welcome to 3 fights all together in one video! This is a new thing we are trialing. I'm suspecting that we will get through the editing of the videos faster and you will get more value for your watch time.
So these fights are shot at a Combat Robotics NZ event and they kindly dragged us along for some fisty cuffs too.
Fight number one. On the left, "Squidgy Gardener," operating veteran Stupid Robot, "Suckalucka." Suckalucka is sponsored by our friends at Get Cultured Probiotic Drinks. getcultured.co.nz Suckalucka is primarily made from a vacuum cleaner, although his large fist is comprised of part of a child's car seat.
On the right we have, "Carnivore" fighting with, "Visionoid." Visionoid was designed and built by Antone from Vision Lab, a local IT firm. visionlab.co.nz To see the build process of Visionoid follow this link... youtube.com/watch?v=ImGjo1b5olE Visionoid has a water blaster cowling head, a pool cleaning robot body for a body and a vacuum cleaner head for a foot.
Both fighters are rookies so it will be interesting to see who will come out on top. Keep in mind that both fighters are at the mercy of my poor workmanship.
Fight number two. On the left we have, "Taniwha" fighting with, "Dr. Alice Swish." Dr. Alice Swish was designed and built by, "Cold Fish Man Slayer," and boasts a loin like head made from a automatic pool cleaner, a body made from a CD changer and a windscreen squeegee for a fist.
On the right we have, "Jaeger Maker," fighting with veteran Stupid Robot, "Father Time." Father Time boasts a plastic kettle head, an upside down moocoo clock for a head and a flip flop for a foot.
Dr Alice Swish has proven herself a hard Stupid Robot to beat. Will Father Time stop her winning streak?
Fight Number three. On the left you will see, "Skippy," operating, "Mike Dyson." a creation of Lucas De Jong from TVNZ's Seven Sharp show. tvnz.co.nz/shows/seven-sharp Mike Dyson actually fought live on prime time TV vs the mighty Tim Wilson and his Stupid Robot, "The Timinator." youtube.com/watch?v=TEi4PIQw-Y4 Mike Dyson features the rather obvious watering can head, plastic tricycle body and Dyson vacuum cleaner feet.
On the right we have, "Amanadon," piloting, "Robo Crow," designed and built by Nick Jones (and family) with help from Shawn Means. Robo Crow is sponsored by the awesome kiwi band, "Mojo Crow." facebook.com/mojocrowband Robo Crow has had a head replacement after the last one was destroyed. This time it's a controller unit from a pool cleaning robot, his body is part of a plastic ride on toy and his feet are from roller blades. This was such an awesome day and I got to rib shoulders with some awesome folks. Thanks so much to Combat Robotics NZ for welcoming your ugly cousin with open arms. facebook.com/groups/CombatRobotNZ

This video is a sped up GoPro video of the wiring up process every Stupid Robot has to go through before each fight. It should shed some light on a bit of the mystery.
In a few days we will hop on Skype with Bugglebots to decorate and give their Stupid Robot some personality.
