In this video, we take a look under the water at what's really going on with the SS Richard Montgomery, and visualise the options up for consideration. --- Disclaimer: This video was created with the best of intentions to hypothesise what various outcomes might look like. This is the result of detailed armchair research of publically available information, but we are not local historians, munitions experts or risk specialists. Would German spies pass the information up the ranks to Hitler? Or would the Nazis recognise a Trojan Horse when they saw one? ---If the contents of the documents were to be believed by Hitler, Nazi forces would be waiting for an invasion from the allied forces in completely the wrong place. The real plan, the invasion of Sicily under Operation Husky would go on undefended, ultimately helping the allied forces regain control and win WW2.
The brainchild of Ewen Montagu and Charles Cholmondeley, with a little help from Ian Fleming, who would go on to write James Bond novels, the top secret mission was put in action and agreed at the highest level by Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower.
But the most crucial factor to this mission's success was a Welsh man in his 30s named Glyndwr Michael who would play the part of Major William Martin. The only problem was that he wasn't an officer in the Royal Marines.
In fact, he'd been dead for 3 months before Operation Mincemeat even took place...
