This weekend it rained but we hosted another little family for Memorial Day BBQ dinner. Here is my plan of attack for readying the house and the menu. Here is what I served:Hot dogs, buns and condiments (incl. relish and a jar of sauerkraut) Potato Salade Nicoise (sans tuna) - using up eggs, celery and olives in my fridge, green beans and tomatoes from the garden Broccoli slawGrilled zucchini and Mexican green onions Veggie sticks and dips (guacamole, hummus)Chips Pitted cherries Cut up Watermelon Here are a few additions tips for keeping this BBQ smooth and on budget:1. Every item on my menu (save for the broccoli slaw) was on sale or I already had 2. Set the table with real linens and real dishes, in a festive color scheme 3. Prepare all the side dishes in advance, so only the meat need grilling 4. Only grill one type of meat to keep costs low5. Custom sheets were also necessary for my vintage cradle which had an off-sized mattress. Even though it seems crazy, I served an artichoke course, roasted 2 chickens, made steak fries (using up a bag of potatoes we had), pulled together a simple salad, and whipped cream to go with a poundcake and raspberries from Costco. This "fancy" lunch isn't something I can pull off all the time, but it was a HUGE treat for us, our guests, and the children enjoyed being treated like little grownups with fancy plates, cloth napkins, and fresh flowers on their table.Do you entertain at home with young children?
