Ernst Krenek (1900 - 1991) aka the Giant Brain, wrote these variations in 1937. The style is uncompromising 12-tone, influenced by his study of Webern. The piece was obviously important to him as he revised it twice, in 1940 and 1957. He dated and place stamped the score "Lausanne 27. 1. 1937"
There are instructions in the score that the second movement may be repeated from shortly after the beginning to shortly before the end. This would have added 5 minutes more of slow music, so I decided against it . An audience can take only so much...
