Krems an der Donau ist mit 24.610 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Jänner 2018) die fünftgrößte Stadt Niederösterreichs und liegt 70 km westlich von Wien. Als Statutarstadt erfüllt sie sowohl die Aufgaben einer Gemeinde als auch eines Bezirks, darüber hinaus ist sie Verwaltungssitz des Bezirks Krems-Land. Die Stadt ist heute Handelsstadt, Kulturstadt sowie Schul- und Universitätszentrum.
