It’s seldom been claimed that ‘moldiness’ is the key to great worldbuilding — but after analyzing tons of sci-fi and fantasy settings, and sacrificing some expired bread, I genuinely believe that mildew is one of the most powerful devices in fiction. Seriously, hear me out on this one. Because, elves used to be my favorite fantasy archetype. They’re the best at everything: fighting, wielding magic, making jewelry, doing sick Tony Hawk pro skater tricks on orcs — they’re perfect. You can go missing in the forest.
It’s something that’s just kind of accepted: that forests are places where things become lost. There is a dark and tangled history that grows in the shadow of the woods: weaving through myth and legend — through stories we’ve told and warnings we’ve whispered into the night. The forest is the void of the unknown, a ravenous mouth that picks clean the bones of trespassers. Because the forest has a stomach.
And that stomach has never been full.

I’ve fallen down a bit of a rabbit hole recently. Because here’s the thing — one wouldn’t expect an imaginary little creature from the 12th century to still hold relevance in modern society. And yet the word of the year was ‘goblin mode.’ So, what is it about these freaky dudes that have kept them a fixture of popular culture?
And what does it say about the human condition?

Doomsday would probably be a huge bummer... you and everyone you know annihilated — every human achievement, every memory, every cone of gelato erased. But if we’re choosing apocalypses out of a lineup, if the world is going to end, I think a monster might be our kindest method of exit.
Nearly every mythology has a creature whose job it is to wipe things clean come Armageddon — it’s strangely universal. And I’d argue that’s because, ironically, it’s the gentlest ending we can imagine.

The problem started with a book.
Actually, I suppose it started with a show, “Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real,” that I watched, enraptured, late one school-night. And you could say it made me a little… obsessed — not just with dragons, but with the paradox right there in the show’s title. If dragons aren’t real, the show asked, how does seemingly every culture, no matter how far apart, have legends of the same creature?
…It's a question that kind of ruined my life.

Once you’ve become a shambling mass of flesh... there’s really no cure.
Not in science fiction, anyway. Whether a character is mutated by a virus, or absorbed into a hivemind — once their body transforms… it’s probably too late. “They’re too far gone!” Another character might shout, just so we’re clear that person is no more, their humanity digested along with their physical form.
I assumed that ‘Humanity Lost,’ a graphic novel by Callum Diggle, would follow the same conventions. I assumed its narrative of an AI mutating every person into a warped nightmare would not be a story about humanity persevering. I was wrong. ‘Humanity Lost’ is a stirring tribute to how personhood can endure no matter how altered the flesh, and with a special edition of the first volume now available, I think it’s time to take a deeper look at this surprisingly hopeful dystopia…

The saddest piece of art I’ve ever seen is about a robot.
Actually, it is a robot. It’s a mechanical arm by artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu that must continually push a leaking liquid back into its body to function. And here’s the thing — I know, rationally, this art installation is not alive. Like every machine, it is, by definition, something artificial.
And no matter how advanced robots become, they’ll never have… souls. Right?

There are many stories in which divine beings come to an end. But what happens after a deity perishes?

This video is a new chapter in my long-running series exploring the incredible speculative evolution saga of Serina, the world of birds. We’ve been following this saga for several videos, watching as, over the past two hundred and eighty million years, an initial group of finches and other creatures left on a distant moon have evolved into a dizzying variety of forms.
When we last checked in, this world had been flung into cataclysm, and the intelligent Sea Stewards had been transported away to another realm. Now, Serina is beginning to recover from the loss of its top species — although the greatest dangers and most extortionary lifeforms still lie ahead.
So, let’s return to this world of birds, and remember to support creator Dylan Bajda on Patreon.

If the world was ending, and you could save only one hundred and sixteen images as the final record of planet Earth, what kind of moments would you preserve?
This is an actual question NASA faced in 1977, when they decided to attach to the Voyager spacecrafts golden records encoded with a selection of photos intended to immortalize life on our fragile planet. And when I look at these pictures, which have now left our solar system and are hurtling out into the cosmic dark, I can’t get out of my head how they will probably be all that’s left of us one day. In the vacuum of space, these images could last for billions of years, outliving the earth, outliving the sun.
And though that should maybe be comforting… I think it scares me.

To empathize with a monster is to go against thousands of years of storytelling precedent. The traditional mythic role of a monster is to be a kind of living obstacle, typically one that embodies dominant fears in its culture of origin.
I remember as a child seeing images depicting the legend of a knight slaying a dragon. But I didn’t have the reaction to these pictures I was supposed to. The dragons didn’t look evil. They looked sad.
And the older I’ve become, the more media I’ve seen where monsters suffer… the less monstrous they seem.

There’s a mod for Red Dead Redemption II… that lets you play as any animal in the game’s ecosystem. And it is, quite literally, a transformative experience. With this mod I tore through a town as a deer, and I raced through the grass as a mountain lion, and I soared through the skies as an eagle… And through it all, I gained a new understanding of a world I thought I was already deeply familiar with. I knew this virtual ecosystem was vibrant, but by changing my perspective, I realized… it’s alive.
Some worlds feel like they exist long before you press play. When a game pulls this off, the results can be breathtaking — and sometimes even a little uncanny. So let’s discover what makes a digital ecosystem truly seem to have a life of its own…

When we think of dead worlds, we typically don’t think of beauty. This is especially true for video games — where the word dead usually implies a setting is lacking in meaningful content. But I want to challenge this assumption, to explore environments that are spectacular and filled with artistic merit, yet are, in their own ways, dead.
For sometimes the end of the world is just the beginning…

Typically, fictional worlds strive for immersion: limiting themselves to certain parameters — even if those limits are more fantastical than reality. But there’s another kind of fictional world, the kind that shatters the confines of the status quo. So say goodbye to gravity, say goodbye to time, say goodbye to space, and prepare for a voyage across realities with no restrictions...

In the miniature environments beneath our feet, vast dramas unfold, often without us ever realizing it. But what if we could become part of these sagas?
In the Pikmin series, you play as a character under two centimeters tall, and experience a tiny yet rich ecosystem from the ground level. And though the Pikmin universe is more stylized than some, its surprisingly complex lore makes it ideal for study.
So, let’s shrink down, and see the world from a new perspective…

It’s a unique experience when a game makes you feel truly unimportant — like you’re just a tiny part of a much larger environment. When a title successfully instills this feeling, it can be like witnessing a sort of magic trick. Beneath the waves, the story of a young whale’s astonishing voyage across uncharted waters is about to begin. But this is not Earth’s ocean, nor is this an Earth whale. This is the saga of “South Scrimshaw,” a game-documentary hybrid created by the brilliant Nathan O. Marsh.
In this video, we’ll follow the young whale’s odyssey through the alien ocean depths, and discover a tale of loss, and deep connections. And you can play the full game yourself and support the artist using the links below.

This is a video about life in other dimensions.
Flat lifeforms in 2D landscapes, psychedelic entities with higher spatial geometry, even beings that can ignore time. While our 3D brains can typically only perceive a limited number of dimensions, with the help of computer simulations and a bit of sci-fi creativity, we can conceptualize some truly mind-blowing hypothetical realities.
So, say goodbye to the 3D world you know, and prepare for life in lower and higher dimensions…

What type of story scares you the most?
Perhaps something dark, visceral, rooted in physical danger? Or something subtle, psychological, with layers of unseen dread? Or maybe something unknowable, inexplicable, that lifts the veil on reality and exposes the cosmic terrors of the universe?
The work of Japanese horror manga artist Junji Ito exists at the intersection of all our greatest fears. His tales capture primal anxieties so expertly they can seem truly mysterious. So, what I want to do today is peel back those layers of mystery, and explore what makes Junji Ito’s worldbuilding so darn spooky. And to do that, we’ll need to find our courage and dive headfirst into this ocean of terrors…

There’s no shortage of aliens in sci-fi. Fantastical beings from distant worlds have been a staple of the genre since its conception. Yet while entertaining, not all pop-culture aliens are the most scientifically rigorous.
But The Yaetuan Sagas, a vast new speculative evolution project from talented artist Christian Cline, explores its titular species with breathtaking detail. With over two hundred pages dedicated to the Yaetuan’s epic journey from microbes to the stars, the book might be the densest exploration of a single alien species ever written.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll attempt to fathom the sheer complexity of the Yaetuans with a little help from the author himself…

When I tell you Simon Stålenhag’s The Labyrinth is a maze you’ll never escape… I don’t think I’m exaggerating.
A sci-fi horror artbook where a mysterious phenomenon turns Earth into a world of ash and decay, the setup seems simple. Likewise, the characters — a trio of survivors journeying across the wastes — seem easy to relate to. Yet the deeper you venture, the more you realize The Labyrinth is a complex tangle of secrets, mysteries, and revelations so gripping that it never truly lets you go.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll attempt to decipher this masterpiece of dark worldbuilding. And like my videos on Stålenhag’s other series, you can purchase the artbook using the links in the description. Now, let’s enter the maze of The Labyrinth…

Locked within its depths are bewildering and uncanny abominations. The keepers of this abyss believe they are in control… They are wrong. This abyss is... the universe of SCP, which began as a seemingly straightforward website where community-members create and classify abominations. Yet from the site, the franchise has grown so vast, influenced so many people, that trying to fathom its totality feels like gazing into an unending expanse.
So, for this entry into the archive, I’ll explore not just the universe itself, but how SCP became one of the most gargantuan and uncontainable forces on the internet.

What do you imagine when I say the future of human evolution?
A superbeing with powers beyond comprehension? A mutated oddity far removed from our idea of humanity? Or perhaps nothing but decaying remains left in the wake of our extinction?
Scientists and sci-fi authors have long speculated on what our future selves will look like — and as technology advances, our species might evolve much faster than natural selection would typically allow. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll explore posthuman scenarios from the absurd to the frighteningly plausible — and meet the many possible successors to humankind…

Have you ever wondered, ‘what is the best number of legs?’ I mean, probably not.
But how many legs a species has is vital to a lifeform’s success, and it’s time someone figured out which number reigns supreme. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll explore every option for leg-count that nature makes available, excluding cases of genetic mutation or limb-loss.

The term ‘Thalassophobia’ means ‘An intense fear of deep water.’ It is one of the most primal and understandable phobias — for the dark abyss has always been a birthplace of monsters.
Lurking below the waves are not only bizarre species known to science — but a vast multitude of imagined leviathans. Something about the fathomless void floods the human mind with visions of nightmarish creatures, which have scared and fascinated us since we first gazed into the deep.

If I were to ask you ‘what is the scariest type of science fiction?’ you probably wouldn’t say ‘Evolutionary Horror.’ …Mainly because it’s a name I came up with for this video, but also because it doesn’t sound particularly frightening. Evolution isn’t scary… or is it?
Twisting through the history of sci-fi is a hidden subgenre that derives terror from the altered self — from the uncanny dread of a force beyond our control evolving the human into the inhuman.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll uncover the terrors of this category, and dive into the type of sci-fi that I find the most fear-provoking of all…

Rain World: Downpour is a game about reinventing an ecosystem. About how precise changes to an environment and the creatures within it can have an incredible effect on a simulated biosphere.
In the expansion, there are five new Slugcats — The Gourmand, The Artificer, The Rivulet, The Spearmaster, and The Saint — to play as, all of which feature not just new, game-redefining abilities — but new regions suited for those abilities, and new creatures to test their limits. And like in the original base game, everything runs on a unique system of procedural animation and AI that makes this pixelated ecosystem feel truly alive.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll discover the hidden depths of Rain World: Downpour, and get some insight from the developers as to how the game came together. Now, let’s reshuffle the roles of this virtual food chain...

This video is about evolution. Not the biological evolution you’re familiar with, where living organisms adapt to their environment. No, this is about virtual evolution. About discovering the extent to which video games, neural networks, and machine learning can shatter the natural order and let us experiment with the building blocks of life itself. …And the extent to which they can make us laugh.
The ambitious dream of using computers to simulate life dates back to Conway’s Game of Life, and you might be amazed at just how far the technology has come with games like Spore, Thrive, and Adapt.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll take natural selection into our own hands, and see how far we can push this concept before things get out of control...

The Electric State is a beautiful nightmare. I don’t know how else to describe it.
I could say it’s an artbook by the brilliant artist Simon Stålenhag that explores an alternate version of the United States in the late 90s. This is true. I could say it’s a story where a young woman and a small robot venture across a ruined landscape littered with the skeletons of terrifying machines. This is also true. I could say it’s a poignant warning of how runaway consumerism can have apocalyptic consequences. This, I believe, is true as well.
Yet none of these descriptions tells the whole. So, for this entry into the archive, I’ll dive deep into this masterpiece of sci-fi worldbuilding. Now, let’s enter the world of The Electric State.

If I were to tell you ‘Rain World has the most complex ecosystem of any game,’ you might go… ‘What?’ Because Rain World doesn’t seem particularly advanced — it’s a 2D pixel art game where you play as a weird slug, how complicated could its world really be?
While there are other games with fancier graphics and denser lore, Rain World’s unique system of procedurally generated animation and complex AI come together to simulate the feeling of a living ecosystem better than (almost) any other game I’ve played. From the lizards, to the scavengers, to the daddy long legs, it’s an incredible feat of worldbuilding.

The Birg Project is a worldbuilding series that brings to life an expansive alien ecosystem, but also delves into the most minute cultural details of its central intelligent species. Created by the brilliant artist Ripley, The Birg Project doesn’t just explore the biology of its titular aliens, but also imagines how they put on clothes, how they play the horn, even how they sneeze.
Also called ‘Birdbugs,’ these extraterrestrials superficially resemble a cross between Earth birds and Earth bugs — and have developed a level of intelligence similar to our own.

For the past century, stories of cryptids — like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster — have continued to fascinate. And while these creatures likely don’t exist, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to speculate on their biology. Enter Cryptozoologicon, a book that imagines evolutionary backstories for legendary creatures. Created by renowned paleontologist Darren Naish, alongside channel mainstays C.M. Koseman (author of All Tomorrows) and John Conway — the volume is so detailed that it’s worth exploring further.

When I look at just one picture from Simon Stålenhag’s Tales from the Loop, I feel like I’ve watched an entire film. In a single, haunting image, a novel’s worth of narrative seems to play out just below the surface. If you’ve ever seen this art before, you’ve probably experienced this too — even if you didn’t know where it was from.
Tales from the Loop and its sequel Things from the flood are worldbuilding projects set in an alternate version of Sweden in the 80s and 90s, in which a gigantic particle accelerator buried beneath the fields and suburbs begins to alter reality in unpredictable ways. Yet the story is so much more than a summary can convey. So, for this entry into the archive, I want to dive deep into the hidden lore of Tales from the Loop — and investigate why this project has struck a chord with myself and so many others.

Have you ever seen a photo of a planet made entirely of living flesh? Or an insect-human hybrid that can control minds? Or a thousand-foot-long sea serpent that emerges in Iceland every year? These images might look like they come from some long-lost paranormal case file. But this is actually the work of the brilliant artist and worldbuilder Eduardo Valdés-Hevia, who has spent the last several years bringing to life a menagerie of nightmares.
Brought to life through a combination of old photographs and new elements, Valdés-Hevia’s art merges history and the surreal, with images that feel like they come directly from classified historical documents. The artist creates stand-alone images as well as richly detailed series with dense, interconnected lore. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll investigate the monsters and madness of these dark case files.

Have you heard of a dragon whose tail releases a spray of explosive slime? Or a dragon that hunts with noxious fumes? Or one that vomits spires of super-heated glass? Across various myths and cultures, dragons have taken on many forms. But few are more fearsome than the terrors that lurk within the pages of the Dragonslayer Codex — a worldbuilding project from the brilliant imagination of artist Sawyer Lee.
The volume is written as a survival guide to the world’s most dangerous dragons, explaining their abilities, behavior, and how to slay them if necessary. But be warned: many of these scaly tyrants will not go down without a fight. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll learn critical things about each species that can mean the difference between survival and searing flames.

Across the infinite cosmos of the video game ‘No Man’s Sky,’ there are a similarly infinite number of alien lifeforms. Through the use of procedural generation, the game contains more than 18 quintillion planets to discover — many of which teem with extraordinary creatures. While No Man’s Sky had a rocky reception at launch, the developers have done persistent work making this virtual universe worth exploring.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll embark on a classic documentary-style expedition, exploring the lives of extraterrestrials on scorching worlds, frozen wastelands, and many others. I’ll also speculate on how the biology of each lifeform might feasibly work. I admit that there are a few too many total planets for this Archivist to document, so this documentary will focus on only the most interesting ones I’ve discovered.

‘Barren,’ a post-apocalyptic worldbuilding project by Keegan Francis, imagines an alternate history where civilization ended in nuclear conflict, and mutated animal life rapidly evolves to rule over the irradiated wastes left behind.
A retro-future that calls to mind the worldbuilding of the Fallout series, the project reveals a world where human survivors must contend with biological horrors created by their own folly. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll travel across the wastes, creating a ‘survival guide’ of sorts to the creatures that roam this desolate world.
Now, let’s cross into an alternate timeline, and witness the broken world of Barren…

The vast oceans of the video game Subnautica and its sequel Below Zero teem with incredible life — some friendly, and some deadly. While the series is focused on survival, the lifeforms of Subnautica are amazing even when they’re trying to eat you: possessing fascinating biology, bizarre behavioral patterns, and hidden mysteries.
I’ve explored the various creatures of the series before on my channel, and in this special compilation episode — you can get the full, documentary-style experience in one video. From the sunlit shallows to the deepest abyss, we’ll explore the biology behind these puzzling aliens, and discover the role they play in their larger ecosystems.
So, let’s take the plunge together, and see what awaits us under the surface…

This video is a new chapter in my long-running series exploring the incredible speculative evolution saga of Serina, the world of birds. Serina was created by the talented artist and worldbuilder Dylan Bajda — and many extraordinary developments have occurred since we last explored this distant moon.
The triumphs and tragedies, the joys and the sorrows of this era are perhaps greater than any that have come before. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll chronicle the rise and fall of fascinating species, and discover astonishing revelations as the world of Serina creeps ever closer to its end…

A Zoologist’s Guide to the Galaxy: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/646643/the-zoologists-guide-to-the-galaxy-by-arik-kershenbaum
In the original series of Star Trek, the show tries to pass off what is clearly someone’s dog with a horn taped to its head as an ‘alien lifeform.’ It’s pretty hilarious to revisit — not just to see the actors make a heroic attempt to stay in-character while carrying this thing around — but also because this unicorn dog doesn’t seem distinct enough from life on earth to make a believable alien.
But this raises an interesting question: if there is life elsewhere in the universe, just how ‘alien’ will aliens look? It’s a question many scientists and sci-fi authors have speculated on, and is a fascinating rabbit hole to go down.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll explore relevant phenomena in evolution and physics to determine if extraterrestrials are more likely to look like Earth animals, or something far stranger...

Humans have always been explorers. As a species, we are innately curious about what lies beyond our horizon. If the day ever comes when we embark across the cosmic oceans beyond our moon, what vessels will we use to discover new worlds?
Few art projects capture the wonder and awe of voyaging to an unfamiliar planet better than the ‘Explorer’ series. Brought to life by incredible digital artist Christian Grajewski, the story is set in a distant future, where the remnants of humanity journey to a lush exoplanet called Aion
The ongoing ‘Explorer’ project doesn’t just examine a vibrant alien ecosystem, but also documents the fascinating vehicles the early explorers use to chart the unfamiliar planet. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll tag along with the first wave of explorers, and voyage across this mysterious world in a range of different machines. And as always, you can follow and support the artist using the links in the description. Now, let’s set off towards Planet Aion…
