I had the idea for this voiceover crossover for days and then this is how it all turned out.
In this AU Simba and Kovu are the same age, Zira and Mufasa are siblings. Basically Zira plays the same role as Scar in canon, she wanted to rule but Mufasa was chosen to be the king by their parents even though Zira was the oldest.
Zira plotted to kill Mufasa but he survived, found everything out and exiled Zira with her followers.
Zira adopted Kovu when he was a teen and decided to use him as a spy, since he and Simba are the same age she taught Kovu to pretend to be Simba's best friend.
At first Kovu wanted to play along but then he liked Simba, they really became friends, grew up together, played.
Simba didn't tell his parents about Kovu and Kovu soon told Simba about Zira. Simba knew about his "evil aunt" but he wasn't worried, he trusted Kovu and thought that Kovu doesn't tell Zira about Simba either, so their bond is secret and can't be forbidden.
Because Simba was afraid his parents wouldn't allow him to meet Kovu if they knew that Kovu lives with Zira.
In time Kovu couldn't lie anymore, he wanted to tell Simba the whole truth about Zira's plan, but couldn't start. Also Kovu was falling deeper and deeper in love with Simba and didn't know how to say this either.
One day he finally told Simba everything. It turned out not as terrible as Kovu imagined, Simba didn't get angry and he agreed to be Kovu's boyfriend 'cause he also loved Kovu but didn't expect Kovu to have these feelings as well.
They don't know how to solve this conflict between Zira and Mufasa yet, they just want to focus on their first date night under the stars.
