This is how to test if your bassoon reed is air proof. A lot of air is essential to a good sound, so the last thing you need in a reed is air leaks.
Tips how to fix the leak:
- Soak the reed for 10 min, when the wood expands the leak might be sealed.
- Tighten the wires.
- Sandpaper the sides, and the backside of the reed to make sure no air leaks there.
Of course when I say in the end: "This is a good reed", it means "This is a good start for a reed to get somewhere". Only because a reed is airproof doesn't mean every problem is solved of course! As it says also in the end of the video, every reed is different and should be approached differently. What this test shows is basically just if the reed is able to hold a vacuum, which means it seals better air than a reed that doesn't.
