On December 20, 2024, as part of Malleshwaram Sangeetha Sabha’s 6th Music Conference, I had the honour and thrill of performing an experimental Konnakkol-centric concert.
This recital brought Konnakkol into the limelight, showcasing its unlimited potential to go beyond its predictable role, as a component of Tani Avarthana or Talavadya Kacheri. With this presentation, I humbly aimed to illustrate that Konnakkol, when rendered with artistic precision - embracing Shruthi, voice modulation, volume control, speed, and clarity - can become a powerful, dynamic and effective accompaniment to the lead vocals. It was indeed a bold and passionate endeavor to reintroduce Konnakkol into the ‘Karnataka Sangeetha Kacheri Paddhati’, reclaiming its rightful place in the classical music tradition.
This concert was an extraordinary journey of experimentation, pushing creative boundaries and embracing innovation at every turn. The magic of this performance wouldn’t have been possible without the immense talent and unwavering support of my co-artists : Vidushi Lakshmi Nagaraj Vidwan Achyutha Rao, and Vidushi Bhagyalakshmi Krishna. Together, we brought few exciting perspectives to the stage, daring to explore new territory with role reversals, esp. during Korapu, creating moments of pure musical brilliance. The audience that evening was nothing short of spectacular. Their enthusiasm and heartfelt appreciation at every point gave us a tremendous moral boost, elevated the experience, and made this journey truly unforgettable.
While the realm of music offers infinite ideas to refine and explore, this concert was a significant and exhilarating first step - a journey of discovery, evolution, and, most importantly, a heartfelt celebration of the timeless beauty of art.
A special mention to the incredible Vidushi Lakshmi Nagaraj for fearlessly joining this concert and delivering a performance filled with utmost brilliance, boldness, and power.
